Welcom to Beijing. Please bring your own respirator!

I am a big fan of the Olympics, but I have to say that I think that Beijing may be the worst location to host the games ever. I have no problem with China, except that they are kicking our collective tails in the import/export business, but when you hear of the poor air quality there, it makes you wonder, what the hell were they thinking when they picked that location. I know we had olympics in LA, but the air quality is still miles above that of China. All of that aside, how will the US fare in the games?

Will the basketball team win the Gold? It depends...they certainly have the best coach for the job. Coach K. can certainly deal with the egos quite effectively. My guess, and it is a guess, is that we will be triumphant.

As for the other events, the US will take their share of the gold in swimming.
Gymnastics will not do as well as they have in the past. I think that ther are a few better teams than us this time around.
Tennis, who really cares?
Baseball? Maybe we can actually qualify and win a game or two, after all it is our national past time.
Softball, the gold is ours, there is no one else that can carry our collective jocks out there.

You can sift through the rest of the sports, but I think that we will not have as great a showing as we would like.

Ahhhh the beauty of doubting the Chinese equivalent of our EPA.

Thank God Americans never really do well in the marathon. This year, instead of a gold medal, the winner gets their own iron lung.

Award winning writer should give it back

Dan Wetzel is an award winning writer for Yahoo sports. Who cares? Good question. I had to get into Mr. Wetzel's grill after reading his less than intelligent column this morning regarding the winners and losers of yesterday's NBA draft. I told you I hate this topic, but I felt compelled to write this blog to call out a less than responsible Caucasian writer. Especially after yesterday's blog. Here is the email I sent to Mr. Bavarian Pretzel, as well as what he wrote in his column. Oh, and I wonder how he would feel if he were to be called an "afterthought" of a human being. As far as I am concerned, he is.
Here are the particulars: Minnesota sent its third pick, O.J. Mayo, along with a guy with a bad contract, Marko Jaric, and two afterthoughts and bad contracts in Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner to Memphis for the No. 5 pick, Kevin Love, still-reliable scorer Mike Miller and two afterthoughts with useless contracts, Brian Cardinal and Jason Collins.
Memphis got the best player. Minnesota got "whiter". And they got more good players.
Hi Dan,

I see that you are an award winning writer. That's really nice. But with all of the racial feuds that are happening right now, Johnny Miller and Rocco Mediate, Shaq and Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Imus and Adam Jones, do you think that you could have used a more socially responsible comment than Minnesota got more whiter? What exactly does that mean? That most of the NBA is a ethnicity other than Caucasian? Thank you Captain Obvious. I am a Caucasian male, but I can't stand that the greatest country on the face of the planet still has to deal with racial blunders. Before you put pen to paper, can you please take more than a nano-second to think about the words you use? I and I am sure others would greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Jay Gallen

I will fill in the blanks should Mr. Warm and Salty Pretzel respond. What a douche bag.

Ahhhh...... the beauty of kicking an ass in the ass.

Will the real racist please stand up?

Man oh man do I hate this topic. I am so sick and tired of people having issues with people of different ethnicities. Once again I will state my stance. It does not matter what color your skin is, black, yellow, green or orange. We are all human beings. We all breath the same air, and we should all have each other's back.

There have been a couple of incidents that have been in the news. One concerning Imus and Adam Jones, and the other with Shaq and Kobe. Here is my take on both of them.

If Imus didn't have a history of using derogatory comments against people of diverse backgrounds, this would be a slam dunk. There was nothing in his comment to Warner Wolf that was derogatory. He asked what color he was, and Wolf said he was African American. Imus' response was oh, well there you go. His statement was vague at best, but yet again, he is under fire. The only advice I would have to Mr. Imus is look, if you were convicted of arson, you should probably not play with matches anymore. When it comes to race, just shut up and you will be fine.

Now the incident with Shaq and Kobe. Shaq apprently feels like he can say whatever he wants whenever he wants, and this time he is catching grief for it. What Shaq needs to do is let it go. Turn the page in your life and move on. It is like a divorced couple that keeps sending each other hate mail. Get over the split and grow up.

The biggest problem I have in all of this is that Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County in Arizona took away Shaq's deputy badges for rude and derogatory language. Shaq apparently used the "N" word and other expletives in his rap to Kobe. Mr. Arpaio said that if one of his sherrif's had used that language he would be fired. Hmmmm. That sounds to me like it is a bit racist. You are taking a badge away from an African American man for using a term that is socially accepted amongst fellow African Americans. Shaq is in no trouble what so ever for sayng these words, yet this is from a man, Mr. Arpaio, that makes his male inmates wear pink underwear and eat green bologna. That sure doesn't sound like it falls into the realm of cruel and unusual punishment too much now does it. It is my feelings that Mr. Arpaio is the true racist here. He is trying to make an example out of an African American employee for doing absolutely nothing wrong. Get out the pens and write to Sheriff Joe and tell him how you feel about that.

Rude, classless, unprofessional, disgraceful...and I am just getting started

I have been a Mets fan since I went to see my first game when I was seven years old. I have suffered through the lean years of the seventies, times when players like Doug Flynn, Craig Swan, Pat Zachary and countless other less than adequate players were employed by the franchise. I remember being one of the thirty five hundred fans in the stands when the team just absolutely sucked, but you know what? They were still my team. After last night, I am going to have to re-evaluate my loyalty.

I cannot believe that the "organization" decided to fire manager Willie Randolph literally in the middle of the night after the team beat the first place Anaheim Angels. Are you flippin' kidding me? Hmmm....let's see.....I know, let's ask Willie to fly out to the west coast, manage a game, win the game, and then let him go after his post game press conference. Yeah, that's it, let's do it that way.

Willie has been a member of MLB in some capacity for over thirty years. He has represented the Mets with nothing but class and respectability. Then, they go ahead and screw him. And treat him conversely to the way that he treated us.

The Mets have every right to hire and fire anyone they want. But it would have been nice to see the same class that Willie has shown during his tenure with the team. I am floored that a professional franchise can completely fowl up something like this. 3:15 Am Eastern Time, was when this happened, are you kidding me? What a joke. Omar Minaya, or whatever other mental midget made this decision should be fired as a human being.

Oh, by the way. The players are not completely ignorant, do think that this methodology was the the best way to motivate the team? Jeeez, please go out and buy a freaking clue.

To the front office of the Mets. You are pathetic, classless, clueless, inept and have shown that you are capable of incompetence of neo-lithic proportions.

Way to go. You can't even fire someone correctly, that does not say much for how you actually run your team.

Ahhh......the beauty of venting.

The Heart of a Tiger

Yes, I know how the old saying goes, but it may be time to re-visit the axiom. I watched in awe this week as I saw Tiger keep within striking distance in the U.S. Open. There were a couple of times where I felt as though my knee was hurting...(oh wait it was (torn meniscus)). I digress...Tiger has shown yet again, that if he is in the hunt, he will find a way to win.

I have to give a ton of props to Rocco. He gave Tiger everything he could handle. He could have closed up shop when he was three shots back, and yet he just kept coming. Those three straight birdies on the back nine were impressive to say the least. Rocco even had a chance to win the championship outright on the eighteenth hole, but it was not to be. Not this time. Perhaps next year, the monster of golf that is the Black Course at Bethpage (by the way, notice the word black, not pink or mauve nor sea foam green) will tame this Tiger, but then again, maybe not. It couldn't the last time he played it.

Ahh........ the beauty of total domination of your craft.

Top 10 Female Sportscasters

I am going to try to keep this as classy and professional as possible. That does not mean that your comments have to follow my lead. I am listing those beautiful women whom I think are the most attractive female sportscasters that are out in the field today. I mean no disrespect to those husbands of said lady sportscasters, as a matter of fact, I wish I were cooking dinner for them when they cam home from a hard day at work.

1) Suzy Kolber: As far as I am concerned, Suzy is the complete package. She has gorgeous eyes, she is well versed in her profession, and anyone who can put up with Jaws and Hoge for the entire football season are good with me.

2) Bonnie Bernstein: She is attractive, I love her long hair. I was sad to see her go the first time from ESPN, but it looks like she might be back for a second tour of duty.

3) Colleen Dominguez: She exudes femininity. She has great eyes, great hair, and ahem...other very endearing female qualities that make her a joy to watch.

4) Stacey Dales: Thank God she lost the Shulman part of her name. I am thinking she may be back on the market. She has great hair, eyes, smile and voice. She is a true sports treasure.

5) Jeannie Zelasko: While there are traits of hers that I find annoying, she is really quite nice to look at. I like her hair, eyes, lips, cheek bones. She is really a true beauty in the classic sense of the word. She even makes Kevin Kennedy look good.....almost.

6) Summer Sanders: The ex swimmer was awesome to watch on fox sports. I am not sure why they cut her show, but when she showed her midriff, all I can think of was WOW!!

7) Rachel Nichols: The most intriguing thing about her is the color of her hair. I hope it is her real color. She also has a quiet sexiness to her. The rest of her attributes speak for themselves.

8) Michelle Bonner: I know that she has an off shaped head, kind of like exaggerated jowls, but she really is made for the long term. She is quite a nice package if you will, and I am quite sure she will never drown with those built in flotation devices she has.

9) Alex Flanagan: Alex is that "Ivory Girl" kind of beautiful. I can see her being that cool soccer mom. She carries herself with a grace and dignity that is really quite attractive.

10) Shelley Smith: I know, I know, she is a big boned woman, but I love the color of her hair, her eyes, her voice. She also kind of has man hands, but from the neck up...OK, chest up, she is quite attractive.

There you have it, what I believe to be the top 10 most attractive woman walking the sidelines and following the biggest sports stories of the day. I do have a few honorable mention ladies that I would like to list at this time.

Erin Andrews (if it weren't for the huge nose, she would have made the cut).
Jeanine Edwards ( probably the most breathtaking eyes I have ever seen) I wish she covered more than freaking horse racing.
Michelle Tafoya (redefines the term MILF)
Dana Jacobson (if I had a grappling hook and 50 foot of rope, it could make for quite a nice weekend).

Ahhhh.... the beauty of beauty.

OK, so I was wrong......kind of

As I was watching the Super Regional games this weekend, I realized that I was this close to being so wrong it would have been right. It turns out that the only two teams that came up short were Arizona St. against Fresno St. and Cal State Fullerton against Stanford. We all make mistakes.

These are no mistakes. Here is the way the college baseball world series is going to play itself out this coming week

Bracket One
Florida St. vs Stanford: The Seminoles will beat the living you know what out of the egg heads from Palo Alto.

Miami vs U of Ga.: The 'Canes are going to rip a new one for the bulldogs from Athens.

This should make quite an interesting second round game of FSU and Miami. Prediction to come later.

Bracket Two
Rice vs. Fresno St.: The other Bulldogs are going to going to get torched by the Owls. Too much pitching and too much offense.

UNC vs. LSU: This is going to be closer than one would think by looking at this mismatch on paper, but the Tigers have something to fight for, but I believe the Tar Heals will come out on top.

The Finals:
This is going to be tough. It really depends on which team has a loss going into the finals. I believe that it will be UNC vs. Miami.

During the regular season, the Heals won two out of three from the 'Canes. I believe that UNC's pitching can silence the strong offense of Miami.

The 2008 UNC Tar Heals will be the national champions of men's baseball.

Ahhhh...... the beauty of the smell of the freshly cut grass, the dew on your spikes, and the smell of that freshly popped corn. Let the Tourney Begin!!!!!

An Ode to a Legend

There must be a really big story in heaven today, and God needed to have one of the greatest journalists ever known to mankind to cover it.

This morning legendary sportscaster Jim McKay passed away at the age of 86.

The ubiquitous voice that transcended all of the sporting world has been silenced forever.

I will never forget the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. While I was only seven years of age, I remember the sadness in Jim's voice when he told the whole world that Israeli athletes had been slaughtered by terrorists. The line that sticks with me to this day was when Jim said "they're all gone". How this passionate family man was able to hold his poise and grace while telling the story is incomprehensible, but Jim knew that sometimes people do bad things to other people, and it was part of his job description to tell the story.

Jim excelled in all areas of his trade. He was a presence on the screen, and his writing skills were unparalleled. He had the innate ability to tell a story. While his professionalism was unmatched by his peers, Jim also possessed the sense of humor that made you feel as though you were his best friend. I remember the time that Jim hit a golf ball over the Great Wall of China. You could see that he was having fun doing this piece. He attempted this golf shot on live TV. No one knew how it would turn out, but it didn't matter, because at that moment, Jim was just stopping to smell the roses. Of course he knocked the golf ball over the wall, and he ended the piece by saying "by George I've done it".

The next time you happen to see an old rerun of the Wide World of Sports, remember how Jim's voice put into perspective the phrase "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat". Yet another example of Jim's ability to bring the human side of sports.

Thanks for sharing your talents with us Mr. McKay. You will not be soon forgotten.

May you rest forever in peace. Take care and be well in heaven.

Ahh.....the beauty of a legacy that will go on forever.

NCAA Super Regionals

It's that time of the year. The time where the NCAA men have their chance to see who goes to the big dance at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha. I have to say that there have been more than one occasion where the super regionals have been better than some of the actual CWS games themselves. Having the opportunity to play baseball in college, I can say for a fact that the blood sweat and tears run at a very high rate. I look forward to the great plays, the game winning hits, the game saving catches, and the jubilation and sorrow that encompass the journey to the tourney.
Here are my guesses....ahem.... rock solid predictions for the NCAA Baseball Super Regionals.

Athens region: NC State (41-20) vs UGA (39-22-1)
Winner: Georgia
Why: Too much pitching and home field advantage.

Baton Rouge region: UC Irvine (41-16) vs LSU (46-16-1)
Winner: LSU
Why: Coach's job is on the line, Anteaters don't have enough offense to keep up with Tigers.

Coral Gables region: U of A (41-17) vs Miami (50-8)
Winner: Miami
Why: Long trip for Arizona and way to much talent on the Miami side of the field.

Tallahassee region: Wichita State (47-15) vs FSU (52-11)
Winner: FSU
Why: Absolutely loaded and the Shockers are not going to be able to match up well with Seminoles.

Tempe region: Fresno State (40-28) vs. ASU (48-11)
Winner: ASU
Why: Sun Devils have been in the top 5 rankings all year top to bottom of the lineup is stacked. Bulldogs accomplished a lot just getting there.

Cary, NC region: Coastal Carolina (50-12) vs UNC (49-12)
Winner: UNC
Why: One of the best match ups. UNC has way too much pitching depth. Chanticleers are in over their collective heads.

Fullerton region: Stanford (38-22-2) vs Cal St. Fullerton (42-20)
Winner: Cal St. Fullerton
Why: Cardinal has been spotty at times. The Titans are battle tested and ready.

Houston region: Texas A&M (46-17) vs Rice (45-13)
Winner: Rice
Why: The second best match up of the Super regionals. A&M will give a run at it, but the Owls will play well disciplined baseball.

There you have it. The eight teams going to Omaha are:
ASU
UGA
Rice
Miami
Cal St. Fullerton
UNC
LSU
FSU

Let the games begin.

Ahhh.... the beauty of the journey to the tourney.

Lord Stanley's Cup

I know, I know. I am a little behind in my prediction of the Stanley Cup Finals, but it isn't all of my fault. I can't find these damned games if my life depended on it. I mean give me a break. The Outdoor Life Channel? What a shame that one of the big four sports has been relegated to the quagmire of a cable channel that covers canoe trips and dog shows. But I digress. Watching game 4 and 5 on NBC was quite a nice surprise. Hockey truly is one of the most beautiful sports. What these guys do day in and day out is quite remarkable.

That being said, there are only two games left at most, and I have to say that Detroit looked very much in control of both games, Pittsburgh just would not let their season end. My prediction is that game six will follow the same path as game five. The Pens will find a way to win game six at home. Game 7 however will be won by the Red Wings. They are just too good and too skilled to lose three games in a row.

So there you have it, Hockey town will be raising the Stanley Cup on it's home ice.

Ahhh ......the beauty of Hockey ending in the middle of June.

What will Brown do for Horse Racing?

I am not by any stretch of the imagination a horse race expert. I just figured that we have a chance to witness a the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years that I might as well throw my hat into the ring. I am going to handicap this race as if it were a golf tournament that Tiger is participating in. I am going to say that I believe if Big Brown can avoid injury/death due to his hoof issue, that he will win the race against the rest of the field. I have seen the previous two races and I was very impressed at how polished and dominating Big Brown was.

So there it is, my best guess that Big Brown will win going away in what promises to be an historical race and day at Belmont Park.

By the way. While I may not follow the sport with all of the interest in the world, I can say that watching these majestic beasts in full gallop is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful sights in all of sports.

Ahhh the beauty of the equine sport.
